Two corresponding exhibitions, both exploring the theme of “Disruption and Progress.”
Iulian Moise focuses on the cultural and aesthetic transformation of Shanghai. Between glass skyscrapers, gigantic infrastructures, and the accelerated pace of modernization, traces of the past persist only in fragments: winding alleys, crowded squares, architectural details. Yet the pressure of development also drives enormous technological advancement—traditional living spaces are displaced to make room for new functions, optimized processes, and the demands of a globalized city. His photographs reveal how memory and cultural heritage are endangered, yet also transformed, within these processes.
Michael Bachhofer approaches the theme of “Disruption and Progress” through technological innovations as well as through ruptures in traditional photography via automated and analytical processes. Hundreds of thousands to millions of images are transformed into a compact distillate that, as in alchemy, has undergone a process of purification. He presents large-format, ultra-high-resolution 2D scans, interactive 2.5D scans, and stereoscopic 3D visualizations—results of his self-developed photographic robots. The most recent among them, a 3D scanner for insects, even appears as a performer during the exhibition.
How to get there:
Take the U2 to Donaustadtbrücke – exit Effenbergplatz. From there, walk down the steps to the
street, continue straight to the traffic light (with a Billa supermarket on the left), then turn right into Kaisermühlenstraße. After a few steps you will reach the second building—the showroom
is already visible from the sidewalk. Cross the courtyard to reach the basement, where you will find OpenCave.
The walk takes only about 3 minutes from the subway station.
